UNDER THE RADAR

by Peter Cumyn is a fast-paced tale of murder and espionage that takes the reader to one of North America’s last bastions of wilderness, a place of majestic mountains, deep fjords and aggressive polar bears.

The body of a dead man is found in a condo in downtown Montreal, and Police Detective Carmel Roch takes charge of the investigation. She learns that the victim was part of a group, including a Russian spy, that is planning to sabotage Canada’s radar defences in the far north. Her search for the murderer leads her to Goose Bay, Labrador, and from there, she follows the group north to the radar site at Saglek Fjord, in the Torngat Mountains, where after a series of dramatic events, she helps the RCMP defeat the radar plot, and succeeds in catching her murderer.

REVIEW

« Peter Cumyn has done it again: an excellent suspense novel with believable characters. The success of the story lies in part in the description of the characters, not mere thumbnail sketches but real people with enough background that make the readers feel they know them enough to care what happens to them. In the manner of his previous novels, the author has captured the atmosphere and the features of the areas where the action takes place, some of which this reader has visited. Waiting for the next instalments! »

AKNA

by Peter Cumyn

David, a medical student in Montreal, is given a small Inuit carving by his ailing grandfather. The amulet seems charged with significance, and accompanies David as he copes with major changes in his family life and meets the girl of his dreams, Akna, up in Labrador. Akna’s aunt Sadie died in mysterious circumstances years earlier, and David comes to realise that there is a close connection between her death and the past history of his own family. The story ends with a dramatic snowmobile race on the ice off the Labrador coast, in which David and Akna bring Sadie’s murderer to bay, and cause him to meet his fate.

REVIEW

« AKNA, the novel, is surprising: It brings to life the most obscure region of North America – Labrador; not just the terrain but also those who call it home. AKNA is a fast-paced and moving family drama, love story and action-packed tale of improbable twists, all tied together in a very satisfying ending. »

THE BIG RIVER

by Peter Cumyn

John Cowan is living a peaceful life on the Big River in Labrador with his part-Inuit wife and their two children when his brother Duncan, whom he hasn’t seen in thirty years, pays him a surprise visit. Duncan wants John to return to his native Scotland to visit their ailing mother. Upon his return, John finds himself thrown back into the life he had left behind and, in particular, the unresolved death of Gerald Symons and a love affair that refuses to die down. During the visit, Jill, an investigative journalist and the girlfriend of John’s sister Sylvia, pieces together the puzzle of Gerald’s death and of the chaos that follows John’s return.

Combining mystery, adventure and love, The Big River gives a small insight into life in rural Scotland in the 1970s and reveals the author’s love for the Canadian north, as epitomised by the wilds of Labrador.
